Apple Drops FORTNITE from The Apple Store.
Epic Games, the gaming developer behind Fortnite, the smash hit battle royale game, has defied The Apple Store Monopoly by bypassing Apple’s standard 30 percent fee. The developer is accused of implementing its own in-app payment system that allowed the company to avoid paying Apple’s well established fees. Apple said in a well detailed statement that “Epic Games look the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result their Fortnite app has been removed.”
The removal is not permanent, as Apple said in a statement to The Verge that, “We will make every effort to work with Epic to resolve these violations so they can return Fortnite to the App Store. In addition, it is also reported that Google has removed Fortnite from its Google Play store. A spokesman stated,”While Fortnite remains available to Android, we no longer make it available on PLAY because it violates our policies...we [however] welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with EPIC [in order]to bring Fortnite back to Google Play.”
In retaliation to Apple and Google’s removal, Epic has filed a lawsuit again Apple seeking to establish Apple’s App Store as a monopoly and released a protest video on YouTube mocking Apple’s “1984” ad and a calling to gaming fans to #freefortnite by supporting it’s fight against Appl and Google. Epic CEO, Tim Sweeney, has called for a substantial change to how Apple and Google conduct business with third-party game developers, complaining that mobile app stores can no longer justify the 30 percent cut they take from all developers, and that “it’s time for change.”
